Sneak Peek:
I love making clothes and I also hate making clothes. I have never felt such joy in my life and I have never felt more stupid. I have triumphed and made mistakes and learned and gotten angry. I have experienced the full range of human emotions while making one garment, all the good and all the bad. I hope that you will have this experience too. I want you to succeed, but I also want you to fail. I believe that the patience and perseverance that you learn when you fail will make you unstoppable.
The hard part is that this kind of skill-building does not come easy, it can be hard and frustrating to walk this path, so I put together some tips that I think about when I encounter a problem that I don’t understand. I hope that these tips are helpful and I hope you don’t cry too many tears while using them.
Step One
I start by taking a deep breath. Often when I don’t understand something I become frustrated and take out my anger on myself. Calming down is great because then I am open to starting back at square one in order to learn something new.
Step Two
Next, I look for multiple video tutorials on the topic I am trying to learn about and I watch them all the way through. Digesting information from multiple sources always helps me learn something better.
Step Three
Then, I practice the technique or concept on scrap fabric that doesn’t matter. That way I can mess up as many times as I need to without messing up the project that I am working on.
Step Four
This process always helps me learn a new concept and practicing helps me perfect my own skills. I believe in your abilities to learn and grow in your sewing skills! I’m rooting for you!!
