Theory: How to Taper Your Pant Legs
1. Measure and mark: Put on the pants inside out and determine the desired width for the taper. Starting from the desired point (e.g., knee or thigh), measure and mark the new width on each leg using chalk or pins.
2. Prepare for tapering: Take off the pants and turn them inside out. Smooth out any wrinkles and lay them flat on a work surface. Make sure the side seams of both legs align.
3. Pin the taper: Starting from the waist or hip area, pin along the marked taper line on each leg. Gradually angle the pins towards the original side seam, maintaining a smooth transition. Continue pinning until you reach the hem.
4. Adjust the fit: Put the pants back on to check the fit and make any necessary adjustments. Ensure the taper is even and balanced on both legs. Take note of any areas that need further alteration.
5. Stitch the new seam: Once satisfied with the fit, remove the pants and carefully stitch along the pinned taper line on each leg. Use a sewing machine or hand stitch, depending on your preference and skill level. Start from the waist/hip area and gradually sew towards the hem, following the taper line.
6. Trim and finish the seam: After sewing, trim the excess fabric close to the new seam, leaving a small seam allowance. Use pinking shears or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying. Press the seam open or towards one side, depending on the fabric and desired finish.
7. Try on and adjust if needed
