Understanding Thread Tension:
Sewing clothes for yourself can be incredibly rewarding, but getting the thread tension right on your sewing machine is crucial for achieving professional-looking results. Below are 5 tips to help you master thread tension and take your sewing skills to the next level.
Understand the basics. Thread tension is all about the balance between the upper thread (from the spool) and the lower thread (from the bobbin). When the tension is balanced, the stitches will look even on both sides of the fabric.
Test on scrap fabric. Before sewing your final project, always do a tension test on a scrap piece of the same fabric. This allows you to adjust the tension as needed without ruining your garment.
Adjust the top tension. The top thread tension is the one you'll adjust most often, as most bobbin tension settings are preset by the manufacturer. Turn the tension dial up to increase tension, and down to decrease it.
Consider fabric weight. Heavier fabrics like denim usually require higher tension, while lightweight fabrics like silk need lower tension. Pay attention to the recommended settings for the fabric you're using.
Use the right thread. Make sure you're using the appropriate thread weight and fiber content for your fabric. Mismatched thread and fabric can throw off your tension.
