The following is an excerpt from my new sewing zine, Blind Date with a Sewing Machine. You can purchase a physical copy here.
I want nothing more than you to fall in love with your creative practice. There is joy and empowerment in the process of making and especially when you are making for yourself. Sewing is an interesting hobby because it sometimes takes a baseline amount of knowledge to even begin. However, if you can think of this learning process as a cheesy rom-com romance, then you might just actually enjoy the task of knowledge-gaining. When I think of my relationship to sewing, I think of true love. I fell head over heels in love with quilting and then later on, upcycling and clothes making. My hope is that you will too. But how does someone begin a hobby when the knowledge you need to know feels unattainable? Start with joy. Joy doesn’t care if your project is perfect. Joy doesn’t care if you do it the “correct” way. What joy requires of you is interest and excitement and effort.
I am so excited to say that my newest zine Blind Date with a Sewing Machine is available now as a physical copy on my site. Perfect for beginners or intermediate sewists looking for a cute guide on out-of-the-box DIY projects.
Note: if you were a member of the (now extinct) Garbie Monthly Zine Club in December, then you will be getting this zine in the mail as your last reward.
I just got a basic sewing machine when I wanted to start and I've enjoyed learning on it. I do daydream of getting on FB Marketplace and getting another or an overlock machine. Maybe some day!
Sewing really does feel like a love story: falling for sewing, wanting to know everything about it sewing, sometimes getting frustrated with sewing, but working through it and then falling in love again. Love the analogy 🥰
