YES! The Artist's Way! Adapted for sewing! Nice! There is nothing like completing a project, especially a large one. When I felt like giving up or running away (usually a couple of days before costume review or dress rehearsal), I reminded myself, "The darkest hour is just before dawn," and pushed through. (Caveat: Mass quantities of treats and coffee also required.) And inevitably, it was a joyous occasion when I saw my hard work on stage, all together, for the first time...I forgot about the aching shoulders and sleepy, angry seam rip-outs. Just do it. Just finish the projects.
I am on week 3 of the Artist's way and I just picked up a sewing project I started back in 2017. I spent too much time trying to "organize" and "plan" it out and now I'm finally in the headspace to just do and finish it. This program is absolutely amazing and I am so glad you're doing it!
I've got to say you've direct access to my mind! I was going to ask if you were aware of the Artists way then I got to the end of your post🤗. I've just finished week 1 and the change in my mental approach has been amazing. Look forward to hearing how it goes with you.
It is a common situation for us creatives. A blessing and a curse. The initial inspiration is so exciting, and sometimes the finishing is less so. I deal with this by having many projects going at once. In my studio I have 5 or 6 artworks at different stages so I can go to the one that fits my energy. I also have my sewing projects, a few for the sewing machine, a few for hand sewing. I also keep sketchbooks for ideas as drawing in those help me remember, and generate new ideas, which helps give me that inspiration excitement. I feel we are so lucky to have so many ideas.
I am not trying to be glib, really: done is better than perfect¹. My perfectionism has gotten in the way of my process a lot. This is often the point at which I run out of enthusiasm. I feel like i don't know enough or it's (whatever I'm doing) is too hard. I am learning to just keep going and solving one problem at a time.
Your plan sounds workable! Go you!
¹ I used to say a different word, but that word now reminds me of evil, so I don't use it any longer.
