If January is proving anything to me its that all we have is each other. From the devastation caused by the LA fires to political unrest. You and me. Us. We. That is all there is.
In my mind, the same goes for sewing.
Knowledge about sewing has traditionally been passed down from one generation to the next. It is about sharing skills and instilling passion into another person. That is my goal with Garbie, to share what I know and to learn what I don’t know and then pass it along to you. So that anyone who is passionate about making clothes for their body can learn the skills needed to excel.
I wanted to take a moment and share my favorite sewing resources. Here they are.
The Sewing Machine
My most common question on TikTok (RIP) is what type of sewing machine I recommend. I love the Singer Heavy Duty 4423 for a lot of reasons! One, the price is good for what you get, around $200. Next, it has a stretch stitch function, making it capable of sewing t-shirt fabric and other stretchy fabrics. Also, a LOT of other creators use it in their videos, making it easy to find tutorials when you run into issues.
Favorite Retailers for Sewing Supplies
Wawak. An organized website for quality sewing supplies.
Sewing Parts Online. My favorite site to find a specific sewing machine foot or part.
Favorite Places to Buy Fabric
Fabscrap. A wonderful retailer that diverts high-end fashion fabrics from the landfill to consumers.
Goodwill Bins. A pay-by-the-pound distribution center for goodwill. I buy clothing that I repurpose into new patchwork garments.
Favorite Pattern-Making Website
FreeSewing.Org. An open-source pattern-making site that allows you to input your measurements and get custom-made sewing patterns and body blocks.
